Asbury Automotive Group Opens Expanded Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston
Asbury Automotive Group, one of the largest automotive retail and service companies in the United States, has celebrated the grand opening of its newly renovated and expanded Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston dealership at 400 Mystic Avenue in Medford, Massachusetts.
The opening marks the completion of a major, multi-year redevelopment project that has transformed a former five-acre office campus into a modern automotive retail and service destination. The newly completed facility significantly expands the dealership’s showroom, service, parking and customer amenities while creating additional employment opportunities for residents in the Medford area.
The project represents a substantial investment in the dealership’s physical infrastructure and reflects Asbury Automotive Group’s strategy of developing modern facilities designed around changing customer expectations. The redevelopment also follows Asbury’s acquisition of The Herb Chambers Companies in July 2025, bringing one of New England’s best-known automotive retail organizations into the Asbury portfolio.
From Corporate Campus to Automotive Destination
The newly opened dealership occupies the former Century Bank corporate headquarters property. Asbury undertook an extensive redevelopment of the site, preserving and renovating the existing structure while adding a new three-story, 120,000-square-foot building.
The new addition was designed to connect seamlessly with the property’s existing five-story tower. Together, the structures have been transformed into a large-scale automotive campus covering more than 200,000 square feet.
The completed facility incorporates four floors of climate-controlled indoor showroom space, creating an environment intended to provide customers with greater comfort throughout the vehicle shopping and ownership experience. The site also includes both indoor and outdoor parking capacity for more than 570 vehicles.
The scale of the redevelopment allows the dealership to bring multiple aspects of the automotive retail experience together in a single location. Customers can visit the facility for vehicle sales, maintenance, repairs and parts while having access to expanded parking and modern amenities.
Expanded Service Capacity
One of the most significant changes at the new facility is the expansion of its service operation.
The dealership now has 37 service bays, nearly three times the capacity available at its previous location. The design also provides the potential to add approximately 37 additional service bays in the future, giving the facility room to expand its operations as customer demand develops.
Service capacity has become an increasingly important component of modern automotive dealerships. Customers expect convenient scheduling, efficient maintenance and repair operations, and facilities that can accommodate a growing number of vehicles.
By substantially increasing its service footprint, Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston is positioned to handle more maintenance and repair activity while providing additional space for technicians and service operations.
The expanded facility also provides substantial on-site parking, supporting customers visiting the dealership for routine maintenance, repairs, parts purchases or new and pre-owned vehicle transactions.
Focus on the Customer Experience
Asbury Automotive Group said the redevelopment was designed with customers, employees and the surrounding community in mind.
Daniel Clara, President and Chief Executive Officer of Asbury Automotive Group, emphasized the company’s focus on creating a more convenient and comprehensive experience for dealership guests.
“This facility represents our continued commitment to delivering an exceptional guest experience,” Clara said. He added that the building was designed and renovated to prioritize customers’ time through additional showroom and service capacity, modern amenities and a more convenient automotive experience.
The expanded showroom gives the dealership additional space to display vehicles and interact with customers, while the larger service department is intended to make vehicle maintenance and repair more accessible.
The project also provides a more modern working environment for dealership employees. As automotive retail becomes increasingly technology-driven, dealership facilities must support not only customers but also sales, service, parts and administrative teams.
Investment Following Herb Chambers Acquisition
The grand opening comes slightly more than a year after Asbury Automotive Group completed its acquisition of The Herb Chambers Companies in July 2025.
The acquisition expanded Asbury’s presence in the New England automotive market and added the Herb Chambers brand and dealership operations to its growing network.
The redevelopment of Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston demonstrates Asbury’s continued investment in its newly acquired operations. Rather than simply maintaining the existing dealership footprint, the company undertook a comprehensive redevelopment of the property to create a larger and more modern automotive campus.
The project also underscores the importance of physical dealership locations even as digital tools become increasingly prominent in vehicle shopping.
Customers may begin their purchase journey online, but dealerships remain important locations for vehicle demonstrations, test drives, financing discussions, delivery, maintenance and long-term service relationships. Modern facilities therefore need to accommodate a combination of digital and physical customer interactions.
Creating New Local Employment Opportunities
Beyond the dealership’s physical transformation, the project is also expected to have an economic impact on the Medford community.
The redevelopment created approximately 50 new jobs for residents in the Medford area. In addition, approximately 50 existing positions were relocated from the dealership’s former Boston location to the new facility.
The larger campus provides space for the expanded workforce while supporting the dealership’s increased sales and service capabilities.
The project is also expected to generate additional commercial tax revenue for the city of Medford. This creates a broader economic connection between the dealership’s expansion and the local community.
For Asbury, the investment therefore extends beyond automotive retail. The company has positioned the redevelopment as an investment in its employees, customers and the community surrounding the dealership.
Sustainability Plans Include Rooftop Solar
Environmental considerations are also part of the facility’s long-term development plans.
Asbury Automotive Group plans to install rooftop solar at the dealership in late 2026. The planned installation reflects the company’s broader emphasis on environmental stewardship and operational efficiency.
Large automotive dealerships require substantial amounts of energy because of their expansive buildings, lighting, climate-control systems, service operations and vehicle inventory.
Adding rooftop solar could help offset a portion of the facility’s electricity requirements while supporting the company’s longer-term sustainability objectives.
The planned solar installation also illustrates how modern automotive facilities are increasingly being designed with energy efficiency and environmental considerations in mind.
Toyota and Asbury Leadership Attend Opening
The grand opening brought together representatives from Toyota, Asbury Automotive Group and the local Medford community.
Toyota leadership, Asbury executives and members of Asbury’s board of directors participated in the celebration alongside Breanna Lungo-Koehn, Mayor of Medford.
The event highlighted the relationship between the automaker and dealership group as well as the importance of the newly redeveloped facility to the local automotive market.
Justin Cornett, General Manager at Toyota Motor North America, presented Daniel Clara with the Katana award during the event. The symbolic honor recognized the continued partnership between Toyota and Asbury.
The presence of Toyota and Asbury leadership at the grand opening underscored the significance of the redevelopment and the dealership’s role within the broader Toyota retail network.
Community Commitment Continues
The grand opening also maintained an important tradition associated with the Herb Chambers organization: supporting local charitable and community organizations.
At the conclusion of the celebration, Asbury presented a check to Friends of Medford Family Network, a local community partner that provides support and parenting education to families in Medford.
The contribution reflects the philanthropic philosophy historically associated with Herb Chambers and demonstrates Asbury’s intention to continue supporting community organizations following its acquisition of The Herb Chambers Companies.
Friends of Medford Family Network works with local families by providing resources, support and educational opportunities designed to strengthen families and promote healthy child development.
By including a community donation as part of the grand opening, Asbury connected the dealership’s expansion with its broader role as a local business and employer.
A New Chapter for Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston
The completion of the Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston redevelopment represents a major transformation of the former office property and the dealership’s operating capabilities.
The combination of more than 200,000 square feet of space, four floors of climate-controlled showroom areas, parking for more than 570 vehicles and 37 service bays gives the dealership a substantially larger footprint than its previous facility.
The potential to add approximately 37 additional service bays also provides room for future expansion. Meanwhile, the planned rooftop solar installation is expected to add an environmental component to the facility’s long-term development.
For customers, the redevelopment brings expanded showroom and service capacity, additional parking and modern amenities under one roof. For employees, it provides a larger workplace and supports the creation of new local jobs. For Medford, the project represents a significant redevelopment of a former corporate property and is expected to contribute additional commercial tax revenue.
The opening also marks an important stage in Asbury Automotive Group’s integration and investment following its acquisition of The Herb Chambers Companies.
As the automotive retail industry continues to evolve, dealerships are increasingly becoming sophisticated retail, service and technology centers rather than traditional vehicle lots. The newly expanded Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston reflects that transition, combining a large indoor retail environment with expanded service infrastructure and plans for renewable energy.
With the redevelopment now complete, Asbury Automotive Group has established a significantly larger Toyota retail and service destination in the Medford community. The facility is positioned to support vehicle sales, customer service, maintenance and parts operations while continuing the Herb Chambers legacy of community involvement.
The grand opening therefore represents more than the completion of a construction project. It marks the beginning of a new phase for Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston, bringing together Asbury’s investment, Toyota’s ongoing partnership, expanded employment opportunities and a renewed commitment to the Medford community.
