Walmart Canada has introduced a hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric semi-truck to its fleet in Mississauga, Ontario, marking a significant step towards achieving a 100% alternatively-powered fleet.
As the first major Canadian retailer to integrate a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck, Walmart Canada is setting a precedent. This Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor operates with zero tailpipe emissions, boasts a range of approximately 800 kilometers, and can prevent an average of 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, according to the manufacturer. Additionally, Walmart Canada is the first retail fleet in North America to use this innovative truck.
The adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology enables longer-haul travel with alternative power, expanding the current capabilities of Walmart’s electric fleet. The initial hydrogen FCEV, sourced by Etobicoke, Ontario-based ITD Industries Inc., will be used for longer trips within Ontario.

Steve Girsky, President and CEO of Nikola, expressed pride in supporting Walmart’s sustainability initiatives. “This collaboration with Walmart Canada aligns perfectly with our mission to drive innovation and environmental responsibility in the transportation industry. Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Electrification, Stephen Lecce, emphasized the province’s efforts in expanding clean energy production. “Walmart’s choice to deploy its first hydrogen-powered semi-truck in Ontario is a testament to our rapidly growing hydrogen economy. This initiative will support businesses across the province in transitioning to hydrogen vehicles and reducing emissions.”

The Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck stores high-pressure gaseous hydrogen in specialized tanks, similar to conventional diesel trucks. The hydrogen is converted to electricity in the fuel cell stack by combining it with oxygen, with water vapor as the only byproduct. This electric power charges the onboard batteries and powers the vehicle via an e-axle with integrated electric motors.
