Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 7272) has announced that it will begin using low-carbon recycled steel sheets, produced in electric furnaces, for motorcycle packaging frames. This marks the first use of such steel sheets for motorcycle packaging in Japan, according to Yamaha Motor’s research as of July 2024.
The recycled steel is made by melting scrap iron in electric furnaces and rolling it into sheets. This process generates significantly less CO2 compared to traditional methods that use iron ore and coke in blast furnaces. Starting in October 2024, Yamaha Motor will source these steel sheets from Tokyo Steel Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Steel) for its motorcycle packaging frames, with plans to gradually increase the use of recycled materials in the future.
The steel is primarily derived from scrap iron from demolished buildings, discarded appliances, and scrapped automobiles. Its suitability for packaging frames has been confirmed through joint trials between Tokyo Steel and Yamaha Motor.
Aligned with its Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, Yamaha Motor aims to achieve carbon neutrality across all supply chains by 2050. As part of this commitment, the company is transitioning to 100% sustainable materials and expanding the use of green and recycled materials.
