Eaton, a leading intelligent power management company, has partnered with Munich Electrification to develop and market its innovative Battery Configuration Switch (BCS). This advanced solution is designed for 400-volt/800-volt dual string battery packs in electric vehicles (EVs), offering a bi-stable device for parallel/series reconfiguration. The BCS enables 800-volt vehicles to charge efficiently through 400-volt chargers, providing enhanced flexibility and several advantages over traditional systems.
Mark Schneider, President of Eaton’s eMobility division, highlighted the significance of the collaboration: “With numerous 800-volt EVs in the market, but many chargers limited to 400-volt supply, BCS offers consumers greater flexibility by expanding their access to DC charging networks. This partnership with Munich Electrification leverages our expertise in electrified mobility solutions and Munich Electrification’s innovation in battery management systems.”
Eaton’s BCS is designed for a range of applications, including automotive, light commercial, and utility task vehicles (UTVs). It reduces the complexity of battery disconnect units by eliminating up to 12 components, simplifying system design, and improving packaging and assembly. Additionally, the BCS reduces contact resistance by minimizing contact points required in traditional contactor systems, enhancing efficiency and performance.
The BCS also prioritizes safety, featuring a mechanical interlock that prevents battery pack short circuits from crashes, software malfunctions, or contactor failures. Its bi-stable design eliminates the need for hold current during normal operation, improving system efficiency and resilience, even in low-voltage fault conditions.
Uwe Wiedemann, Managing Director of Munich Electrification, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “By combining Munich Electrification’s expertise in EV battery innovation with Eaton’s knowledge in electrical switching and automotive manufacturing, we’re addressing key challenges for our customers.”
Eaton’s BCS technology is part of its broader commitment to advancing vehicle electrification solutions. Founded in 1911 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange for over a century, Eaton generated $23.2 billion in revenue in 2023 and serves customers in more than 160 countries. Driven by sustainability and innovation, Eaton is dedicated to accelerating the global transition to renewable energy and solving the world’s most pressing power management challenges.
