Amprius Technologies, a leader in next-generation lithium-ion batteries utilizing its Silicon Anode Platform, has announced the delivery of its SiMaxx™ A-Sample EV Cells to the United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC (USABC). The USABC aims to advance battery cell and system technologies to meet future performance and cost goals for electric vehicles. These cells are engineered to tackle key EV challenges, such as range anxiety and fast charging.
Amprius’ internal testing revealed that the A-Sample EV cell demonstrates remarkable performance, achieving a specific energy of 360 Wh/kg at the start of its life, well above USABC’s target of 275 Wh/kg at end of life. Additionally, the cells deliver a power density of 1200 W/kg, potentially enabling significantly longer ranges than current commercial EV batteries. The cells can also charge to 90% in just 15 minutes, surpassing USABC’s goal of 80% within the same time.

Amprius has conducted technical engagements with several automotive OEMs and collaborated closely with USABC. The A-Sample EV cells were delivered on schedule in September, marking the completion of a $3 million USABC technology development contract awarded in May 2022 to produce a low-cost, fast-charge silicon nanowire battery. Amprius anticipates further evaluations from automotive manufacturers following this achievement.
USABC, a subsidiary of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR), collaborates with Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis, supported by a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). USABC’s mission focuses on advancing energy storage technology for next-generation electrified vehicles and is guided by mid- and long-term goals for commercialization and development.
