Mullen Expands US Battery Production with Nikola Asset Purchase

Mullen Automotive, Inc., a forward-thinking electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is making significant strides in enhancing its U.S. battery production capabilities. In its latest development, the company has expanded its operations by acquiring additional battery line equipment from Nikola Corporation. These assets will be integrated into Mullen’s Fullerton, California facility, further solidifying the company’s commitment to the domestic production of critical battery components.

Mullen’s Vision: Advancing U.S. Battery Production

Mullen Automotive’s Fullerton facility is now dedicated to producing next-generation, American-made battery packs, modules, and advanced solid-state polymers—key elements of its mission to contribute to the nation’s zero-emissions future. The company’s focus on bolstering local manufacturing operations aligns with its overarching goal of reducing reliance on battery materials imported from abroad, especially as the demand for electric vehicles and their components continues to surge.

The newly acquired assets from Nikola include the following:

  • High-Volume Standard Battery Chemistry Production Line: This will enable Mullen to expand its capacity to produce large quantities of conventional battery packs, a critical component for powering EVs on a mass scale.
  • Electro-Dynamic Shaker System: Also known as a vibration table, this system will be used for in-house laboratory testing of batteries and other system components, ensuring the highest standards of quality control and performance.

Expanding Capabilities in Fullerton

Upon installation, these newly purchased assets will complement Mullen’s existing battery production lines and testing facilities, allowing for the following:

  • Two High-Volume Standard Battery Chemistry Production Lines: These lines will further enhance Mullen’s capacity to meet growing demand for EV battery packs.
  • High-Precision, Low-Volume Standard Battery Chemistry R&D Line: This line will be used for research and development of innovative battery technologies, focusing on small-batch production and prototype testing.
  • High-Precision, Low-Volume Solid-State Polymer R&D Line: Solid-state batteries are considered a next-generation technology, offering improved energy density and safety features. This line will focus on advancing this cutting-edge technology.
  • Full Battery Testing Laboratory: The lab will facilitate testing for both current and future battery projects, ensuring that all components meet the rigorous standards required for commercial EV production.

Enhancing U.S. Manufacturing

Mullen Automotive is increasingly focused on ramping up its U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities in response to the rising demand for domestically produced EV battery systems and components. By establishing a robust, homegrown battery production ecosystem, the company is positioning itself to capitalize on both commercial vehicle production and emerging industry applications.

“Our commitment to transitioning to American-made battery components is progressing smoothly, and we are executing this vision right here in Southern California,” said David Michery, CEO and Chairman of Mullen Automotive.

Strategic Acquisitions and DOE Funding Support

The recent acquisition from Nikola is part of Mullen’s larger strategy to invest in its own battery production infrastructure. In September 2023, the company made its first major purchase of battery production assets from Romeo Power, a subsidiary of Nikola Corporation, for approximately $3.5 million. This initial acquisition included valuable equipment, inventory, and intellectual property for high-volume EV battery pack and module production.

In addition to the Nikola acquisition, Mullen is also actively working with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to secure additional funding for its U.S.-based manufacturing initiatives. On December 17, 2024, Mullen Automotive submitted a modified plan to the DOE, incorporating its facilities in Mishawaka, Indiana, and Fullerton, California, to support domestic Battery Production and pack production. The company is seeking $55 million in matching DOE funds to accelerate the development of its U.S. manufacturing capabilities and meet growing demand for American-made EV components.

U.S. Manufacturing Expansion

Mullen Automotive, headquartered in Southern California, is rapidly expanding its footprint in the U.S. automotive sector. The company currently operates two vehicle manufacturing plants: one in Tunica, Mississippi, which spans 120,000 square feet, and another in Mishawaka, Indiana, occupying a vast 650,000 square feet. These plants are central to Mullen’s operations, where it is building the next generation of commercial electric vehicles (EVs) designed to meet the evolving needs of the transportation sector.

In August 2023, Mullen began production of its commercial vehicles at the Tunica plant, marking a significant milestone in its quest to redefine the electric commercial vehicle landscape. As of January 2024, Mullen’s first two Battery Production electric commercial vehicles, the Mullen ONE (a Class 1 EV cargo van) and the Mullen THREE (a Class 3 EV cab chassis truck), both received certification from the California Air Resource Board (CARB) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), paving the way for their availability for sale in the U.S. market.

The company’s focus is not only on producing vehicles but also on expanding its commercial dealer network. Mullen has already established partnerships with seven key dealers across various regions, including the West Coast, Midwest, Pacific Northwest, New England, and Mid-Atlantic markets. These dealers, such as Papé Kenworth, Pritchard EV, National Auto Fleet Group, Ziegler Truck Group, Range Truck Group, Eco Auto, and Randy Marion Auto Group, provide essential sales and service coverage for Mullen’s expanding customer base.

Strengthening the EV Supply Chain

As part of its broader mission to strengthen the domestic EV supply chain, Mullen is taking strategic steps to ensure that both its vehicle production and battery supply are tightly integrated. The company’s investment in local battery production, including its growing research and development capabilities, is a testament to its long-term commitment to the U.S. market and its role in the transition to clean, sustainable energy.

With a keen focus on expanding its U.S. manufacturing footprint, Mullen is well-positioned to lead the way in the development and production of Battery Production electric commercial vehicles, contributing to the growth of the U.S. EV ecosystem while simultaneously creating jobs and driving economic growth.

The Road Ahead

Looking forward, Mullen Automotive continues to forge ahead with plans to produce its own commercial vehicle battery packs while exploring additional commercial sales opportunities. With the increasing demand for EVs, the company is strategically positioning itself to benefit from a growing shift toward electric transportation across the country. Mullen’s vision to integrate battery production, vehicle manufacturing, and innovative technologies is set to make a significant impact on the future of American-made EVs and the global transition to sustainable energy.

As the company continues to evolve and expand its operations, it remains dedicated to its goal of providing zero-emissions transportation solutions that help reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels while creating a cleaner, greener future. With its expanding battery production capabilities, strategic acquisitions, and robust vehicle manufacturing infrastructure, Mullen Automotive is on a clear path toward becoming a leader in the electric vehicle industry, contributing to the global effort to reduce emissions and combat climate change.

Through its investment in American-made battery components and the development of cutting-edge EV technologies, Mullen is positioning itself not just as a player in the automotive industry, but as a key driver in the larger clean energy movement. With the backing of federal funding, a strong commitment to U.S. manufacturing, and a clear vision for the future, Mullen is paving the way for a new era of sustainable transportation in the United States and beyond.
