GM Energy Transforms Your General Motors EV into a Game-Changing Power Source

Revolutionizing Energy: How GM Energy is Turning Your Electric Vehicle into a Powerhouse for Your Home and Lifestyle

Electric vehicles (EVs) have long been heralded for their immediate and clear benefits: lower maintenance costs and the elimination of tailpipe emissions. However, the real potential of EVs is just beginning to be unlocked. At General Motors, we are envisioning a future where your electric vehicle is not just a means of transportation but the cornerstone of a broader, sustainable energy ecosystem. GM Energy is here to harness the power of EVs, offering reliable, accessible, and convenient energy solutions for your vehicle, home, and lifestyle.

This vision is built on four key pillars: public charging, home charging, home energy management, and most importantly, knowledge. Here’s a deeper look at how we are transforming the electric vehicle experience and shaping a future where your EV does far more than just drive you from point A to point B.

Public Charging: Building a Robust Network Across the Nation

A key part of GM Energy’s strategy is making public charging as accessible and convenient as possible. The goal is simple: provide an extensive network of fast-charging options across the country to make owning and operating an EV seamless.

Currently, GM customers have access to more than 231,000 public charging ports, including nearly 50,000 DC fast chargers throughout the U.S. This number continues to grow daily as GM collaborates with various partners to expand the charging infrastructure. The company has adopted a collaborative approach, working with policymakers, public utilities, and charging solution providers to build a comprehensive and robust national charging network.

As part of this effort, GM Energy is working alongside industry leaders and the GM Enterprise Data, Analytics & Insights (EDAI) team, leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to pinpoint the most strategic locations for public charging stations. These sites are often located along busy interstate highways, in bustling suburban areas, and in dense urban centers where home charging may not be available for renters.

GM Energy is also partnering with EVgo to install over 2,000 fast-charging stalls in high-traffic areas across the country. In addition, GM has entered into a collaboration with ChargePoint to add up to 500 fast-charging stations nationwide, with the first site already operational. The company is also teaming up with Pilot Flying J to introduce fast-charging lanes at their travel centers, ensuring that EV drivers have access to clean facilities, food, and beverages while recharging their vehicles during long road trips.

GM is one of the eight founding global automakers of IONNA, a joint venture focused on creating attractive, EV-friendly rest stops to cater specifically to the needs of electric vehicle drivers.

Through a NACS (North American Charging Standard) charging adapter, GM drivers can also access over 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across the U.S. and Canada, further enhancing the accessibility and convenience of charging.

Thanks to the GM mobile brand app or your vehicle’s built-in navigation system, locating the nearest charging station is a breeze. Not only can you map your route to find charging stations along the way, but you can also pay for your charging session directly from your smartphone, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience every time you need a top-up.

Home Charging: Charging Your EV at Home

Imagine never having to stop at a gas station again—recharging your electric vehicle at home is a game-changer. With a home charger, you can wake up every morning with a fully charged battery, ready to hit the road.

For the vast majority of American drivers, home charging can easily cover up to 80% of daily driving needs. Depending on the EV, a full charge could give you enough range for a full day’s worth of driving. Take the 2025 GMC Sierra EV Denali, for example: with a GM-estimated 460 miles of range on a full charge, it’s enough to drive the entire length of the Grand Canyon twice.

When you’re ready to make the switch to an electric vehicle, GM Energy’s team of advisors is available to help you select the ideal home charging solution to meet your specific needs. Whether you’re looking for a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, we ensure that your EV is always powered and ready for the road ahead.

Home Energy Management: Powering Your Home with Your EV

Your electric vehicle can do more than just transport you from one place to another—it can also serve as a vital energy source for your home. This is where GM Energy’s home energy management system takes the EV experience to the next level.

GM’s EV batteries can now be used to power your home during a blackout, providing you with security and peace of mind during unexpected power outages or natural disasters. This ability is enabled by the GM Energy PowerShift charger, paired with the V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) Enablement Kit. These systems allow your compatible EV’s battery to supply power to your home, ensuring you have access to essential energy during critical times.

PowerShift on its own offers the fastest home charging available. However, with the V2H Enablement Kit, you can unlock the full potential of bidirectional charging. This means your EV’s battery doesn’t just charge your vehicle—it can also send electricity back into your home when needed, all managed conveniently via the GM mobile brand app. You can customize this functionality to best suit your energy requirements, giving you more control over how and when your vehicle powers your home.

For those who want even more resilience and control over their home’s energy needs, GM Energy offers the GM Energy Home System. This advanced setup includes stationary battery storage, which provides an always-ready backup power supply for your home. The GM Energy PowerBank stores energy from the grid and keeps it available for when you need it most, particularly during peak demand hours when electricity costs are higher. By combining two 17.7 kWh GM Energy PowerBanks, you can create a 35.4 kWh energy reserve—enough to power an average American home for up to 20 hours.

Additionally, for homeowners with solar power systems, GM Energy’s Home System allows you to capture energy from the sun and store it directly in the PowerBank, ensuring you have a sustainable energy source to draw upon when rates are high, or when the sun isn’t shining. This creates a truly self-sufficient energy system, allowing you to generate, store, and utilize your own clean energy, reducing dependence on the grid and minimizing energy costs.

A Smarter, More Sustainable Future

GM Energy’s vision goes beyond providing just an electric vehicle or a home energy solution. We are building a future where energy independence and sustainability go hand in hand, empowering drivers to take control of their energy needs.

By combining public and home charging with cutting-edge energy management systems, GM is creating a new kind of energy ecosystem—one that makes it easier for drivers to reduce their carbon footprint, save on energy costs, and increase their resilience against power outages. With GM Energy, your electric vehicle isn’t just a mode of transportation—it’s the key to a more sustainable, self-sufficient, and smarter lifestyle.

The future of energy is here, and it’s powered by your GM EV.
