GM Becomes Top-Selling EV Automaker in Canada for First Half of 2025
Backed by a rapidly expanding portfolio of electric vehicles from Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, General Motors has claimed the top spot in Canadian EV sales through the first half of 2025.
GM has now led Canada’s EV market for three consecutive quarters. In Q2 2025, its EV market share surged to 23.2%, up from just 8.1% a year ago—propelling the automaker from sixth to first place in national EV sales rankings.
Electric vehicles now represent 8.7% of GM Canada’s total vehicle sales, with more than 60% of EV buyers being new to the GM family—an encouraging sign of growing brand appeal among first-time customers.
“For the past two years, GM has led the Canadian auto industry in total sales, and now that leadership includes EVs,” said Shane Peever, Vice President of Sales, Service and Marketing at GM Canada. “With 13 EVs across Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, we’re offering Canadians more choice than ever, and that’s bringing new customers into the GM family.”
Q2 2025 Highlights:
- The Chevrolet Equinox EV, starting under $49,000, ranked second in Canada’s compact all-electric SUV segment, driven by demand for affordable, family-focused options.
- Cadillac dominated the luxury EV segment with a 30.5% market share. The OPTIQ was the most-registered luxury EV in Canada through June 2025.
A Diverse and Growing EV Lineup
GM now offers 13 EV models in Canada — more than any other automaker — spanning mainstream, luxury, and commercial segments. Key models include:
- Full-size electric trucks: Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC HUMMER EV.
- Luxury SUVs from Cadillac: Escalade IQ, OPTIQ, and LYRIQ.
- Family-friendly electric SUVs: Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV.
- Commercial solutions: BrightDrop electric vans for fleet customers making the shift to zero-emission transport.
With broad offerings and increasing consumer interest, GM is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in Canada’s fast-evolving EV market.
