AUMOVIO Launches Advanced Trailer Assistants for Safer, Simpler Towing Operations

CES 2026: AUMOVIO Unveils Breakthrough Trailer Assistance Technologies to Transform Towing Safety and Ease

At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, AUMOVIO is set to redefine what it means to drive, maneuver, and park with a trailer. Addressing one of the most persistent challenges faced by drivers of vehicle-trailer combinations, the company has introduced two advanced driver assistance innovations designed to dramatically simplify towing while enhancing safety in even the most demanding situations. The newly developed Trailer Backtrack function and Trailer Collision Warning system represent a major leap forward in trailering technology, with market availability targeted for 2027.

Whether hauling cargo trailers, recreational vehicles, boats, or work equipment, drivers across North America and beyond often encounter high-stress scenarios when reversing, turning, or navigating tight spaces. AUMOVIO’s latest solutions aim to eliminate uncertainty and reduce the risk of costly accidents by combining intelligent automation, real-time sensor data, and intuitive vehicle control.

With a growing number of drivers relying on trailers for both professional and leisure purposes, these innovations underscore AUMOVIO’s commitment to making trailering safer, more accessible, and more intuitive for everyone—from experienced operators to first-time users.

Meeting a Growing Demand for Smarter Trailering Solutions

Trailering remains one of the most complex driving tasks, even for seasoned drivers. In markets such as North America, where pickup trucks and SUVs frequently tow cargo trailers, campers, and recreational equipment, the margin for error is often slim. Tight parking spaces, narrow loading ramps, poor lighting, and unpredictable surroundings can quickly turn routine maneuvers into stressful experiences.

Despite the rise of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for everyday driving, trailer-specific support has historically lagged behind. AUMOVIO is addressing this gap head-on by expanding its portfolio of dedicated trailer assistance technologies—solutions that not only assist drivers but actively intervene to prevent mistakes before they happen.

“Anyone who has ever reversed with a trailer knows how difficult it can be,” said Ibro Muharemovic, Head of the Autonomous Mobility business area in North America at AUMOVIO. “Maneuvering with a trailer is one of the biggest challenges for drivers. With our two new assistance functions, we are making trailer handling significantly easier and safer—almost effortless.

Trailer Backtrack: Reversing Made Simple at the Touch of a Button

One of the most common frustrations when towing a trailer occurs after a failed attempt to enter a parking space or loading area. A driver approaches at the wrong angle, realizes the maneuver won’t work, and then struggles to realign the vehicle and trailer without jackknifing or drifting further off course.

To address this scenario, AUMOVIO has been offering its Trailer Reverse Assist system since 2020, supporting both conventional trailers and gooseneck or fifth-wheel configurations. That system allows drivers to intuitively control the trailer’s direction using a simple interface, assisted by on-screen graphics.

The new Trailer Backtrack function takes this concept to an entirely new level.

With a single button press, the system automatically returns the vehicle and trailer to their original starting position by retracing the exact path driven forward. The advanced assistance function precisely controls steering, acceleration, and braking, ensuring the vehicle-trailer combination follows the same trajectory in reverse—without deviation.

Drivers no longer need to manually correct steering angles or worry about compounding mistakes. Once activated, the system executes the maneuver autonomously, allowing the driver to focus on situational awareness rather than complex vehicle dynamics.

This capability is particularly valuable in constrained environments such as crowded parking lots, urban loading zones, narrow driveways, or boat ramps, where repeated maneuvering attempts increase the risk of collisions or damage.

Trailer Collision Warning: Preventing Impact Before It Happens

While reversing challenges are well known, turning and cornering with a trailer pose equally serious risks. A frequent cause of damage occurs when drivers underestimate the larger turning radius of a trailer, resulting in the trailer striking the rear corner of the towing vehicle—or colliding with nearby obstacles such as parked cars, curbs, or pedestrians.

AUMOVIO’s new Trailer Collision Warning system is designed to prevent exactly these types of incidents.

The system continuously calculates the turning path of both the vehicle and the attached trailer in real time. By monitoring steering angle, speed, trailer articulation, and the surrounding environment, it can detect when the selected maneuver could lead to a collision—either between the vehicle and trailer or with external objects.

When a risk is identified, the driver receives timely visual and acoustic warnings. A real-time path overlay displayed on the vehicle’s screen clearly illustrates whether the current steering input will result in a collision, allowing the driver to adjust before damage occurs.

This assistance function supports a wide range of scenarios, including reversing, starting off, tight cornering, and low-speed maneuvering, significantly reducing the likelihood of costly repairs or personal injury.

Leveraging Existing Vehicle Technologies for Intelligent Assistance

One of the most notable aspects of AUMOVIO’s new trailer assistance functions is their ability to leverage technologies already present in modern vehicles.

The Trailer Collision Warning system uses surround-view cameras and, where available, radar sensors to build a detailed understanding of the vehicle’s environment. By intelligently networking these sensors, the system can identify pedestrians, cyclists, poles, walls, and other obstacles with high accuracy.

This sensor fusion approach enables real-time environmental modeling without requiring additional hardware in many vehicle configurations. It also ensures seamless integration with existing ADAS platforms, making the technology both scalable and cost-efficient for automakers.

By combining advanced software algorithms with proven sensor technology, AUMOVIO continues to demonstrate how software-defined vehicle architectures can unlock powerful new capabilities through intelligent system integration.

A Comprehensive Trailer Assistant Portfolio

The two new assistance functions showcased at CES 2026 expand an already extensive portfolio of trailer-related innovations offered by AUMOVIO—one of the most comprehensive on the global market.

The company’s trailer assistant family includes solutions for:

  • Assisting with coupling the vehicle to the trailer
  • Automated and assisted reversing for various trailer types
  • Overtaking assistance while towing
  • Automated support for launching boats
  • Specialized functions for complex trailer configurations

AUMOVIO gained international recognition at CES 2021 with its award-winning “Transparent Trailer” technology. This innovation uses surround-view camera feeds to virtually remove the trailer from the driver’s field of vision on the display, allowing them to “see through” the trailer and monitor traffic, pedestrians, and obstacles behind and beside it.

Together, these technologies form a cohesive ecosystem designed to remove the intimidation factor from trailering while increasing safety, confidence, and driving comfort.

AUMOVIO’s Vision for the Future of Mobility

Since its spin-off in September 2025 from the former Continental Automotive sector, AUMOVIO has continued to build on decades of expertise as an independent technology and electronics company. Headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, the company employs more than 86,000 people across over 100 locations worldwide.

AUMOVIO’s portfolio spans sensor technologies, displays, braking systems, comfort and safety solutions, and advanced software platforms. The company plays a key role in shaping the future of software-defined vehicles by integrating hardware and software into flexible, scalable architectures.

In fiscal year 2024, the business units that now form AUMOVIO generated sales of €19.6 billion, underscoring the company’s strong market position and technological leadership.

Raising the Standard for Trailer Safety

With the debut of Trailer Backtrack and Trailer Collision Warning at CES 2026, AUMOVIO is setting a new benchmark for trailer assistance systems. By addressing real-world pain points with intelligent, user-friendly solutions, the company is helping drivers of all experience levels handle trailers with greater confidence and precision.

As trailering continues to play a vital role in work, recreation, and logistics, innovations like these will be critical in reducing accidents, improving efficiency, and making mobility safer for everyone on the road.
