DHL Supply Chain, a leader in contract logistics, and Diageo North America, a premium drinks company, are introducing two hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric trucks into their U.S. fleet. Manufactured by Nikola Corporation, these Class 8 trucks will operate at Diageo’s campus in Plainfield, Illinois, marking a sustainable milestone for the state.
For over 20 years, DHL has partnered with Diageo to drive sustainability in logistics, reducing carbon emissions year-over-year through various green initiatives like electric vehicles, route optimization, and multimodal transport. The new hydrogen fuel cell trucks, supported by Nikola’s HYLA modular refueler, reflect DHL’s “Green Logistics of Choice” commitment as part of its Strategy 2030.
These trucks convert hydrogen into electricity, providing up to 500 miles of range on a single fill while eliminating tailpipe emissions. Replacing diesel trucks, they are projected to cut carbon emissions by 80% over a year. Beyond environmental benefits, these trucks improve driver comfort and safety by reducing noise, vibration, and driver fatigue while offering enhanced visibility with advanced cameras.
Diageo North America’s President, Marsha McIntosh, highlighted the importance of this partnership in advancing sustainable operations at their Plainfield hub, which supports iconic brands like Captain Morgan and Smirnoff. Diageo aims to reach net zero carbon emissions in direct operations by 2030 and across its value chain by 2050, as part of its Spirit of Progress plan.
Local leaders, including Plainfield Mayor John F. Argoudelis and State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel, praised the initiative for aligning with Illinois’ clean energy goals. Nikola’s CEO, Steve Girsky, emphasized the shared commitment to zero-emissions transport with DHL and Diageo.
The project involved 18 months of planning and collaboration with local stakeholders, including trials and safety education for a seamless deployment. DHL and Diageo have been sustainability partners since 2015, and their continued innovation in green logistics positions them at the forefront of sustainable transportation.
