EVgo Launches First Fast Charging Stations Under Toyota’s ‘Empact’ Initiative

EVgo one of the nation’s largest providers of public fast charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs), and Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (“Toyota”) have announced the opening of the first DC fast charging (DCFC) stations built under Toyota’s “Empact” vision. These newly deployed stations, located in Baldwin Park and Sacramento, California, represent a major step in expanding access to high-speed EV charging infrastructure in underserved communities.

EVgo and Toyota Expand EV Charging Access

The new co-branded charging stations, which are owned and operated by EVgo, feature the latest fast-charging technology, capable of serving up to eight vehicles simultaneously. Each station is equipped with 350kW fast chargers, designed to provide rapid charging solutions for a growing number of electric vehicles on the road today. This development underscores the increasing importance of reliable and widely available charging infrastructure as more consumers consider purchasing or leasing EVs.

“The availability of charging infrastructure is a key factor in encouraging EV adoption,” said Scott Levitan, Executive Vice President of Growth at EVgo. “As automakers continue to introduce new electric vehicle models, EVgo remains committed to expanding our fast-charging network to support current and prospective EV drivers. Collaboration with automakers like Toyota has been instrumental in our growth, and we deeply appreciate their continued support.”

Toyota’s “Empact” Vision for Electrification

Toyota first announced its “Empact” vision in April 2023 as part of its broader strategy to facilitate a smooth transition to electrified transportation, particularly in communities that have historically faced barriers to EV adoption. The initiative is focused on three key pillars: increasing access to charging infrastructure, making electrified mobility solutions more affordable, and contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.

By addressing these crucial aspects, Toyota aims to ensure that the benefits of electrification are accessible to a diverse range of consumers. The newly opened EVgo fast-charging stations will provide essential support to local residents, businesses, and visitors who require convenient and efficient EV charging solutions.

“Our collaboration with EVgo plays a crucial role in advancing broader access to charging infrastructure for all battery EV drivers, including those driving Toyota and Lexus BEVs,” said James George, General Manager of EV Charging Solutions at Toyota Motor North America. “We are committed to ensuring that our customers have access to a reliable and efficient charging network, and we believe these new stations will be a valuable resource for communities in Baldwin Park and Sacramento.”

Strategic Locations for Enhanced Accessibility

The newly launched fast-charging stations are strategically placed in areas with high consumer activity, including shopping centers, grocery stores, and restaurants. By integrating charging infrastructure with daily routines, EV drivers can conveniently recharge their vehicles while running errands or enjoying leisure activities.

EVgo’s focus on providing charging stations in accessible locations aligns with Toyota’s mission to remove barriers to EV adoption, particularly in urban and suburban communities where access to home charging may be limited. This initiative is expected to enhance the overall charging experience and encourage more drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles.

Complimentary Charging for Toyota bZ4X Owners

In addition to expanding EV charging infrastructure, Toyota and EVgo have extended their charging partnership by offering one year of complimentary charging for customers who purchase or lease the 2025 Toyota bZ4X battery-electric compact crossover SUV. This initiative aims to enhance the ownership experience and ease the transition to EVs for new Toyota customers.

Drivers can locate EVgo charging stations and take advantage of the complimentary charging offer using the Toyota App on their mobile devices. This seamless integration of charging services helps Toyota bZ4X owners access reliable charging solutions with minimal effort.

Government and Community Support for EV Infrastructure

The launch of these charging stations has garnered strong support from local government officials and community leaders. They recognize the role of robust EV infrastructure in reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and supporting sustainable transportation initiatives.

“Toyota and EVgo’s efforts to bring advanced fast chargers to Sacramento mark an important milestone for our community,” said State Senator Angelique Ashby, D-Sacramento. “Fast charging stations like these provide critical infrastructure that supports the widespread adoption of clean energy transportation in Senate District 8. This initiative is a win for both the environment and the future of sustainable mobility in our region.”

State Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio, D-Baldwin Park, echoed similar sentiments regarding the positive impact of EV infrastructure investments. “We are thrilled to welcome a new EV fast-charging station to Baldwin Park. This development will support our city’s residents and visitors, offering them a convenient place to charge their vehicles while contributing to cleaner air in our region. Investments like these are crucial for promoting sustainable transportation options and improving air quality.”

The Future of EV Charging Expansion

As demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, EVgo and Toyota are committed to further expanding their network of fast-charging stations to serve an even greater number of drivers. The success of this initial deployment under the “Empact” vision demonstrates the potential of public-private collaborations in accelerating the transition to an electrified transportation ecosystem.

By focusing on community-based infrastructure development, Toyota and EVgo aim to make EV ownership more practical and accessible for all consumers, regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic background. This approach aligns with broader state and federal efforts to promote clean transportation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Looking ahead, both companies plan to explore additional opportunities to enhance charging infrastructure, including potential expansions into new cities and regions. These initiatives will help shape a future where EV drivers can rely on a vast and well-maintained charging network, ultimately driving widespread EV adoption across the country.
