Forest River, Inc. is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its founder, Peter J. Liegl. Pete was not only a visionary who revolutionized the RV industry but also a proud Hoosier and a generous philanthropist. He is survived by his wife Sharon, daughter Lisa L. Rees, son-in-law Logan Rees, grandchildren Adrienne (6) and Ryan (3), and brother-in-law Gary Chamberlin.
Pete’s extraordinary journey began with modest roots and culminated in the creation of Forest River, Inc., one of North America’s largest RV manufacturers. His passion for innovation, commitment to quality, and relentless drive reshaped the RV industry and inspired countless individuals.
After gaining valuable experience in sales, management, and operations with companies like Midas Motorhomes and Shasta, Pete co-founded Cobra Industries. When circumstances led to his departure from Cobra, Pete started anew—crafting his first RV by hand in a barn. His dedication saw him sell his first units under a lamp post in Louisville, marking the humble beginning of Forest River’s legacy.
In 1996, Pete founded Forest River, Inc. in Elkhart, Indiana, with a mission to bring the joys of nature to Americans nationwide. Under his leadership, Forest River expanded beyond RVs to include buses, cargo trailers, and marine products. His focus on innovation, strategic acquisitions, and delivering high-quality products at competitive prices drove the company’s rapid growth.
Pete’s leadership style emphasized employee empowerment, consumer focus, and a culture of accountability. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously,” he once said, “but we’re very serious about what we do.” Even in 2024, after announcing a succession plan, Pete remained actively involved, leading initiatives that would secure the company’s future.
Pete’s personal philosophy drew inspiration from his namesake, the Apostle Peter, whose story of transformation resonated deeply with him. Like his namesake, Pete’s life reflected themes of resilience, redemption, and unwavering commitment to his beliefs.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Pete was deeply committed to his community in Elkhart. His philanthropic efforts, often conducted privately, supported causes in education, healthcare, conservation, and local development.
Pete’s booming laughter, twinkling eyes, and indomitable spirit will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His visionary leadership and generous heart leave an enduring legacy that will inspire generations to come.
