IONNA, Backed by GM, Launches First ‘Rechargery’ EV Charging Station, Ushering in a New Era of Convenient Electric Vehicle Charging
For electric vehicle (EV) owners seeking a more reliable, convenient, and user-friendly charging experience, there’s exciting news on the horizon. IONNA, the ambitious nationwide EV charging network backed by General Motors (GM) and seven other major automakers, has officially launched its first-ever charging station, aptly named the “Rechargery.” This marks a significant milestone in the evolution of EV infrastructure in North America.
Introducing the Rechargery: A New Standard for EV Charging
If you own an electric car, it might be time to visit the Rechargery. Unlike the typical, nondescript charging stations often tucked away in the corners of grocery store parking lots, the Rechargery represents a bold new approach to EV charging. It’s designed to deliver not just power to your vehicle but also comfort, convenience, and an elevated experience for drivers and passengers alike.
IONNA, which was announced last year as a joint venture involving GM and seven other prominent automakers, aims to revolutionize how EV owners perceive public charging. By focusing on both technical efficiency and customer-centric amenities, the Rechargery is poised to become the go-to destination for EV drivers nationwide.
The First Rechargery Opens in North Carolina
This week, IONNA celebrated the grand opening of its very first Rechargery, located in the bustling Research Triangle Park area of Apex, North Carolina. This flagship site is equipped with 10 state-of-the-art charging bays that support both the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and Combined Charging System (CCS) standards. Each bay is capable of delivering up to 400 kW of fast-charging power, significantly reducing charging times for modern EVs.
“For EV drivers accustomed to using nondescript fast chargers hidden behind shopping plazas, the IONNA Rechargery offers a dramatically improved experience,” said Duncan Aldred, Vice President of Global Commercial Growth Strategies and Operations at GM. “We’ve listened to clear consumer feedback, and we’re delivering what EV owners truly want: reliability, convenience, and comfort. The Apex Rechargery is just the beginning of our coast-to-coast network, which will eventually extend into Canada.”
Designed with Drivers in Mind
IONNA’s approach to EV charging goes beyond simply installing more chargers. The company is focused on creating an environment where drivers feel welcomed and supported. The Apex Rechargery features a range of amenities designed to make the charging experience more enjoyable:
- Comfortable Lounges: Climate-controlled seating areas where drivers can relax while their vehicles charge.
- Snacks and Beverages: A well-stocked selection of refreshments to keep travelers energized.
- Clean Restrooms: A basic necessity often overlooked at traditional charging sites.
- Complimentary Wi-Fi: Enabling drivers to stay connected while on the go.
- Pet-Friendly Spaces: Because road trips often include our furry friends.
“Part of GM Energy’s mission is to take customer needs seriously and apply our expertise to make EV ownership easier and more accessible to everyone,” said Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy. “With IONNA, we’re addressing the three biggest pain points for EV drivers: the need for more public charging bays, improved reliability, and better amenities. Seeing this vision come to life in Apex is incredibly rewarding.”

An Expanding Network with Ambitious Goals
IONNA’s plans for growth are nothing short of ambitious. The company has already secured 100 sites across the United States, with a goal of activating 1,000 live charging bays by the end of the year. This rapid expansion is a testament to the strong demand for high-quality EV charging infrastructure.
Drivers can track the progress of new Rechargery locations via IONNA’s website and social media channels. Each new site will be strategically placed along major travel routes and in urban centers to ensure maximum convenience for EV owners.
Leveraging Technology for a Seamless Experience
One of the standout features of IONNA’s Rechargeries is the integration of cutting-edge technology designed to make the charging process as effortless as possible. In the near future, IONNA will introduce automated, AI-powered grab-and-go refreshment stations. These innovative kiosks will utilize computer vision technology, allowing customers to select their snacks and beverages and simply walk out without the hassle of traditional checkout lines.
Additionally, IONNA is working on implementing a seamless plug-and-charge system, particularly optimized for GM vehicles. This technology will enable drivers to simply plug in their EVs without the need for additional authentication steps, streamlining the entire charging process.
“This is about more than just putting chargers in the ground,” explained Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA. “We are building an experience that puts drivers at the center of every decision we make. Alongside our founding OEM partners, we’re redefining what reliable, accessible charging looks like in North America. Our goal is to give drivers true choice and peace of mind, whether they’re in the showroom or behind the wheel.”
The Bigger Picture: Supporting the EV Revolution
IONNA’s launch comes at a pivotal time in the automotive industry. As EV adoption rates continue to rise, the need for a robust, reliable charging network becomes increasingly critical. By addressing key issues such as charger availability, speed, and user experience, IONNA is positioning itself as a leader in the next phase of the EV revolution.
The company’s partnership with major automakers ensures that its network will be compatible with a wide range of electric vehicles, making it easier for drivers to transition to cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.
