Mativ and Miru Expand Partnership to Speed Automotive eWindow Commercialization

Mativ and Miru expand partnership to accelerate commercialization of automotive eWindow technology

Mativ Holdings, a global provider of advanced specialty materials, has taken a significant step toward accelerating the commercialization of next-generation smart glazing solutions by making an equity investment in Miru Smart Technologies (“Miru”). The move deepens the strategic partnership between the two companies and positions Miru for large-scale commercial production of its proprietary dynamic electrochromic window technology, known as the eWindow, with a particular focus on automotive applications.

The investment reflects growing momentum behind electrochromic glazing as vehicle manufacturers seek solutions that improve energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and design flexibility while supporting broader sustainability and electrification goals. By strengthening their collaboration, Mativ and Miru aim to transition eWindow technology from advanced development into high-volume, automotive-grade manufacturing—an essential step toward widespread adoption across future vehicle platforms.

From Co-Development to Commercial Readiness

Mativ and Miru’s partnership builds on several years of close technical collaboration, primarily through Argotec, Mativ’s advanced polymer films business. Argotec is widely recognized for its high-performance thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films, which are already used in demanding applications across aerospace, automotive, and industrial markets.

Since entering a joint development agreement in 2024, the two companies have made notable progress in validating Miru’s electrochromic technology under real-world automotive constraints. Their collaboration has moved beyond laboratory-scale demonstrations to address the practical challenges of durability, optical performance, scalability, and manufacturability.

One of the most significant milestones achieved during this period was the successful development of one of the world’s largest compound-curved electrochromic sunroofs, measuring approximately 1.5 meters by 1.6 meters. This achievement demonstrated not only the technical viability of Miru’s eWindow technology at automotive scale, but also its compatibility with complex vehicle glass geometries increasingly favored by OEMs.

In 2025, the partnership reached another important inflection point with the fulfillment of initial commercial purchase orders from major glass manufacturers. These early orders signaled growing industry confidence in the readiness of eWindow technology and reinforced the need for a robust manufacturing and supply chain strategy to support future demand.

Strategic Alignment for High-Volume Manufacturing

The latest investment marks a transition from collaborative development toward full-scale commercialization. Rather than focusing solely on innovation, the partnership now centers on aligning production capabilities, infrastructure, and long-term growth strategies.

A key pillar of this alignment is the synchronization of Miru’s ambitious growth objectives with Mativ’s global manufacturing footprint. Miru has articulated a long-term mission to deploy 10 million square feet of eWindow technology by 2028, a scale that requires reliable access to advanced materials, extrusion capacity, and quality systems that meet automotive standards.

Mativ’s global extrusion capabilities and experience supporting high-volume industrial customers make it a natural partner to help bridge this gap. By aligning capacity planning and production strategies early, the two companies aim to reduce commercialization risk and shorten time-to-market for OEM programs.

Equally important is the optimization of operational frameworks required for automotive qualification. Vehicle manufacturers demand stringent performance across temperature extremes, UV exposure, mechanical stress, and long service lifetimes. The strengthened partnership focuses on integrating these requirements into manufacturing processes from the outset, rather than retrofitting solutions later.

Strengthening Supply Chain Resilience

As the automotive industry continues to experience supply chain volatility, resilient and vertically aligned sourcing strategies have become critical. The Miru–Mativ partnership addresses this challenge by integrating Argotec’s optically clear, high-performance TPU-based films directly into Miru’s patented electrochromic manufacturing process.

These films play a crucial role in achieving the optical clarity, durability, and uniform tinting required for premium automotive glazing. By leveraging Argotec’s established supply chain and quality systems, Miru gains access to materials that can be produced consistently at scale, reducing reliance on fragmented or unproven sources.

This integration not only supports automotive demand but also positions the technology for expansion into architectural glazing, building and construction, and other industrial applications, where energy efficiency and solar control are becoming increasingly important.

Enabling Energy Efficiency and EV Performance

Miru’s eWindow technology offers tangible performance benefits that align closely with automotive electrification trends. When paired with Argotec’s polymer films, eWindows provide a neutral tint, high optical clarity, and advanced solar heat management without the color distortion often associated with conventional tinted glass.

One of the most compelling advantages is the potential to extend electric vehicle driving range by up to 10%. By reducing solar heat gain, eWindows lower the load on vehicle HVAC systems, which are a significant source of energy consumption in electric vehicles. This improvement can translate directly into longer range, improved passenger comfort, or greater design flexibility for OEMs balancing battery size and vehicle weight.

Beyond efficiency, electrochromic windows also enable new user experiences, allowing drivers and passengers to dynamically adjust transparency and shading based on lighting conditions or personal preference. This aligns with broader trends toward intelligent interiors and software-defined vehicles.

Executive Perspectives on the Partnership

Mativ President and Chief Executive Officer Shruti Singhal emphasized that the investment reflects both confidence in Miru’s technology and alignment with Mativ’s long-term strategic priorities.

“Mativ pioneers engineered materials designed to address the world’s most complex challenges through innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability,” Singhal said. “Building on our strong performance in 2025, this investment underscores our belief in Miru’s electrochromic technology and our shared objective to establish eWindows—integrated with Argotec technology—as a global benchmark for energy-efficient glazing.”

From Miru’s perspective, the investment represents validation of years of technical development and a critical step toward production readiness. Curtis Berlinguette, Founder and CEO of Miru, highlighted the importance of partnership-driven commercialization.

“Miru’s growth reflects the challenge of translating breakthrough science into a production-ready vehicle platform,” Berlinguette said. “That progress has been shaped by close collaboration with industry partners, and Mativ has played an important role in that journey. With this investment, we are strengthening our manufacturing capabilities and supply chain to deliver the next generation of smart windows at scale.”

Industry Visibility and Market Momentum

The partnership between Mativ and Miru has gained increasing visibility across the global glass and automotive supply chain. Joint demonstrations at Glasstec 2024 and Glass Performance Days 2025 showcased the maturity of the technology and its readiness for commercial deployment.

These events brought together OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, architects, and material experts, reinforcing the broad applicability of electrochromic glazing across multiple sectors. Feedback from these forums has helped guide refinements in design, manufacturability, and performance, further accelerating the path to market.
