In the fall of 2023, the ATC made the decision to replace its fleet of Nissan Armada and Frontier security vehicles with two Nissan Ariya models. The change was part of an effort to further the center’s commitment to sustainability while still maintaining the performance and durability required for the challenging conditions. One of the Ariya models was lightly modified to better suit the demands of the harsh terrain. It was outfitted with off-road tires, a roof rack, auxiliary lighting, and decals to meet the security needs of the ATC.

Pushing the Limits

Over the course of their first year in service, the Ariya security vehicles each racked up over 30,000 miles—a testament to their ability to handle even the most demanding conditions. “ATC has a large portion of its property operated as a farm, which means the vehicles are continuously driving on dirt and gravel paths with ruts and washboards,” Thunes explained. “After a monsoon, some of these access roads turn into a mud bog, creating an even tougher challenge.”

Despite these extreme conditions, the Ariya performed flawlessly. “It has thrived on a steady diet of nothing but dirt and fast charging,” Thunes added.

Security staff members at ATC, who spend the most time behind the wheel of these vehicles, have also been impressed by the Ariya’s ability to handle the harsh conditions.

“These vehicles handle virtually everything we throw at them—from rugged terrain to extreme heat—without any issues,” said Dakota Repass, a member of the ATC security team. “The Ariya is tough, dependable, and ready for anything.”

The facility now relies on a fleet of 10 Ariya SUVs to support a variety of other operations, including driver training and other logistical functions. “We are committed to reducing carbon dioxide generation wherever possible,” Thunes said. “We are installing level-2 charging stations on site for our staff who drive EVs. To help offset the increase in electrical consumption from the utility grid, we are putting solar panels over the parking lot. The shade from the solar panels will also help reduce energy consumption by keeping parked vehicles cooler.”
