Pilot, General Motors and EVgo Reach Milestone With 200+ Fast Charging Locations, Powering the Future of Nationwide EV Travel
The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is one of the most significant transformations in the history of the automotive industry. But as millions of Americans consider making the shift from gasoline-powered cars to EVs, one question consistently comes up: Will there be enough reliable charging stations to support long-distance travel?
Today, that answer is increasingly “yes.” Pilot Company (Pilot), General Motors (NYSE: GM), and EVgo Inc. (NASDAQ: EVGO) have announced that their collaborative EV charging network has now surpassed 200 locations, stretching across nearly 40 states. Together, the companies have deployed nearly 850 new fast-charging stalls nationwide, just two years after launching their initiative.
This joint venture is not only a response to market demand but also a strategic effort to address one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: charging accessibility on long road trips and in underserved regions.
Building a Nationwide EV Backbone
When Pilot, GM, and EVgo first revealed their partnership in 2022, the goal was ambitious: to construct up to 2,000 fast-charging stalls at as many as 500 Pilot and Flying J travel centers across the U.S. By creating a seamless charging experience along key travel corridors, the companies sought to bring the “freedom of the open road” to EV drivers.
Fast forward to 2025, and the collaboration is nearly halfway to its long-term target. With over 200 locations live, many of them strategically placed along heavily trafficked interstates, the network is becoming a critical piece of America’s EV infrastructure.
These locations are particularly impactful because they sit at Pilot and Flying J travel centers — hubs that are already well known to millions of drivers. For decades, these centers have served as reliable pit stops offering food, restrooms, and fuel. Now, they are being reimagined as multi-fuel energy destinations, blending traditional gasoline and diesel offerings with high-speed EV charging.
Closing the Gaps: Reaching Rural America
One of the most striking achievements of the Pilot-GM-EVgo partnership has been its ability to expand coverage into areas that have long been underserved. At the beginning of 2025, only 45% of rural counties in the United States had at least one fast charging stall. Many EV owners found it nearly impossible to travel across less-populated regions without extensive planning.
In less than a year, the network has grown from covering 25 states to nearly 40. Newly added states include Colorado, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. These additions are particularly significant because they connect major regional travel routes that previously lacked reliable charging options.
Expansion has also been robust in larger states such as Texas, Missouri, and Florida, ensuring that drivers in high-demand regions have even more options. By building out coverage in both rural and urban areas, the partnership is bridging the gap between EV ownership and everyday usability.
Charging With Convenience in Mind
The companies’ vision goes far beyond simply placing chargers in parking lots. Their approach is centered on driver experience.
At Pilot and Flying J locations, EV drivers benefit from:
- High-Power Chargers: EVgo’s 350kW fast-chargers can deliver significant range in a short time, getting drivers back on the road quickly.
- Driver Comfort: Locations are equipped with free Wi-Fi, on-site restaurants, restrooms, and convenience stores, offering more than just a place to plug in.
- Weather Protection: Many chargers are covered by overhead canopies, providing shelter from rain, snow, or extreme sunlight.
- Towing-Friendly Design: Pull-through charging stalls make it easier for drivers towing trailers or traveling in larger electric vans to access charging ports.
- Plug and Charge Technology: For compatible vehicles, charging is as easy as plugging in, with automatic initiation and payment built into the process.
These enhancements represent a deliberate attempt to make EV charging as convenient — and in some cases, even more enjoyable — than filling up at a gas station.
Voices From the Leaders
Shannon Sturgil, senior vice president of alternative fuels at Pilot, emphasized the company’s customer-first approach:
Pilot is here to fuel the journeys of all drivers. Our fast-charging network raises the bar for convenience, reliability and exceptional service by offering an experience designed to show EV drivers that they matter.”
EVgo’s CEO, Badar Khan, highlighted the cultural significance of the initiative:
Hitting the open road is a natural emblem of American culture, and traveling by car means drivers can set their own schedule to stop and charge when and where they want. Our EVgo eXtend network, built in collaboration with Pilot and GM, is delivering reliable charging to communities large and small — ensuring freedom of fueling choice for every driver.”
And Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy, spoke to how this initiative ties into GM’s broader EV strategy:
With over a dozen electric vehicles across Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac, GM is giving customers the right vehicle to take them wherever they want to go: from highway driving to off-road trails. Through our collaboration with Pilot and EVgo, we’re committed to helping ensure that charging access doesn’t get in the way of your EV journey.”
Why This Collaboration Matters
The U.S. transportation sector is undergoing a dramatic shift. Automakers are investing billions in EV manufacturing, battery technology, and software innovation. However, without adequate charging infrastructure, consumer adoption could stall.
This is where partnerships like Pilot-GM-EVgo play a pivotal role. Unlike smaller independent networks, this alliance brings together:
- Pilot’s nationwide footprint of travel centers strategically located along interstate highways.
- General Motors’ scale and EV portfolio, spanning mainstream to luxury vehicles.
- EVgo’s technical expertise in building and operating fast-charging networks.
Together, they are creating a synergistic model that is both scalable and sustainable.
The Road to 2025 and Beyond
By the end of 2025, Pilot, GM, and EVgo expect to reach 1,000 charging stalls across 40 states. This milestone would bring them halfway to their ultimate goal of 2,000 stalls at 500 locations.
But the vision doesn’t stop there. As EV adoption accelerates, charging networks will need to scale even faster. Analysts project that the U.S. will require tens of thousands of additional fast chargers by the end of the decade to meet growing demand.
The companies’ current momentum suggests they are well-positioned to continue leading in this space. By focusing on reliability, accessibility, and customer experience, the Pilot-GM-EVgo partnership is not just building a network of chargers — it’s laying the foundation for the future of American mobility.
