Rivian Unveils Next-Gen R1S and R1T Models

The new R1S SUV and R1T pickup have undergone a comprehensive reengineering process, featuring hundreds of hardware improvements, performance upgrades, a fully redesigned software experience, and evolved in-house drive systems. Retaining Rivian’s iconic exterior design, this second generation enhances efficiency with a zonal electrical architecture and introduces significant advancements with new compute and autonomy platforms. Customers can also enjoy new motor configurations, design elements, and a variety of trim and tire options.

“We continue to evolve our flagship R1 vehicles, offering quality and performance without compromise. Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries further, creating our most capable products to date,” said RJ Scaringe, Rivian CEO and founder.

Performance for Every Adventure

The new R1 platform delivers more power, performance, and range, courtesy of Rivian-designed and built drive units available in Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor configurations. The Quad-Motor R1T boasts 1,025 horsepower, achieving 0-60 mph in under 2.5 seconds, with 1,198 lb-ft of torque in Launch Mode. A Rivian-built Dual-Motor option is also available. These motors are entirely designed, engineered, and manufactured in-house.

The new Large and Max battery packs feature redesigned modules and more efficient packaging, enhancing manufacturability and serviceability while providing up to an estimated 420 miles of range. For customers seeking value, a new lithium iron phosphate-based Standard pack offers up to an EPA-estimated 270 miles of range.

The next generation platform includes a redesigned heat pump-based thermal system, improving temperature comfort and range efficiency. New 22-inch aero wheels and tires, with a drag coefficient as low as 0.297, further optimize range. Additionally, updated suspension and air springs ensure a smoother on-road ride without compromising off-road capability.

Advanced Technology

The second-generation R1 vehicles feature an entirely new electrical architecture and compute platform, reducing the number of ECUs from 17 to 7, maximizing efficiency and eliminating 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of wiring per vehicle.

The new in-house developed Rivian Autonomy Platform represents a significant leap forward in capability. Equipped with 11 cameras, five radars, and AI prediction technology, this system offers exceptional compute power—ten times that of the previous system. With 360-degree visibility, eight times the camera megapixels, and redundant sensors, the system ensures enhanced vision even in adverse weather and lighting conditions. Standard features include high-resolution camera Blind Spot Monitoring and Highway Assist. The premium Rivian Autonomy Platform+ offers even more advanced capabilities, with Lane Change on Command available immediately and Enhanced Highway Assist coming later this year.

New headlights and taillights incorporate Adaptive Drive Beam technology, enhancing driver awareness on dark roads by dynamically adapting to oncoming traffic.

New Experiences and Designs

The next-generation R1S and R1T offer new features and options. Rivian owners can use car keys in Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch, or select Google Pixel devices, to unlock and start their vehicles seamlessly, and share keys digitally with family and friends.

A new Rivian-developed sound system featuring Dolby Atmos® provides an immersive audio experience, revealing greater depth, clarity, and detail in music.

Connect+, a new subscription service, supports streaming video through Google Cast and offers access to over 3,000 apps, bringing entertainment directly to the R1’s center display. Rivian has partnered closely with Apple Music to integrate this feature into its software platform, giving customers access to Apple Music’s catalog of over 100 million songs and 30,000 playlists, ad-free. With Rivian Premium Audio, users can also enjoy Apple Music’s Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos for an all-encompassing sound experience.
