Toyo Tire Chooses HPE Green Lake Cloud to Speed Up HPC-Driven Development of Next-Generation Tires

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) has announced that Toyo Tire Corporation has chosen HPE to provide its seventh-generation high-performance computing (HPC) system through the HPE GreenLake cloud. This new system, which is three times more powerful than its predecessor, will be delivered as a service, accelerating the development of next-generation tires. By processing structural tire data with enhanced precision, the upgraded system significantly shortens the time required for complex design simulations and AI model training.

“Toyo Tire’s commitment to tire innovation is evident through their use of high-performance computing,” said Hiromasa Mochizuki, Senior Vice President and Managing Director for HPE Japan. “We are excited to collaborate with Toyo Tire, providing them with powerful HPE Cray performance via the HPE Green Lake cloud. This solution offers optimal performance in a flexible environment, supporting a new era of innovation with increased speed and efficiency.”

The new advancements help Toyo Tire address global trends, including the shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) and improvements in tire performance to reduce environmental impact, such as fuel consumption, noise levels, wear resistance, and load-bearing capacity.

“As the automotive industry embraces digital transformation and shifts towards simulation over physical prototyping and performance testing, there is a growing demand for mathematical models of tires. This approach is more cost-effective and sustainable,” said Tamotsu Mizutani, Corporate Officer and Division General Manager, Technology Development Division of Toyo Tire. “Our new HPC system supports this transition towards digitized simulation. We are eager to leverage the system’s enhanced capabilities to accelerate our AI model training.”

Toyo Tire collaborated with HPE experts to optimize TOYO-FEM, a critical in-house computer-aided engineering (CAE) application, resulting in nearly a threefold increase in performance. This improvement allows more designers to run simultaneous simulations and reduces the time needed for large-scale design simulations by up to 50%. The optimization also enhances Toyo Tire’s deep learning inverse problem solver, crucial for developing new design specifications such as tire structure, shape, and patterns.

Toyo Tire selected the HPE Green Lake cloud for its fully managed, end-to-end solution, utilizing HPE Cray XD systems to upgrade its HPC resources and increase access for designers. The HPE Green Lake cloud offers a modern experience with managed infrastructure, consumption analytics, and predictable economics, streamlining IT and business operations. The HPE Cray XD systems provide expanded performance with higher density, allowing Toyo Tire to maximize its data centre space.
