Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) showcased a special-purpose Hilux, modified with the support of an authorized external vendor, at the Himtech 2024 symposium. The event, organized by the Indian Army in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), aligns with the national goal of “Raksha Atmanirbharta” (defense self-reliance). Himtech 2024 focuses on utilizing military technology in high-altitude areas (HAA) and was held on September 20th and 21st, 2024, at the Rinchen Auditorium Grounds in Leh, Ladakh. The event saw the presence of senior officials from Army Commands, the Air Force, ITBP, and other key defense personnel, along with TKM representatives.
The 4×4 off-road Hilux, known for Toyota’s trademark QDR (Quality, Durability, and Reliability), is designed to perform in the most challenging terrains, making it ideal for specialized needs, including military applications. TKM’s participation underscores its commitment to developing unique mobility solutions for a variety of sectors. At the event, TKM highlighted the following customized models:
- Hilux FDV (Field Deployment Vehicle): This model demonstrated its heavy-duty commercial potential and had already passed trials with the Northern Indian Army Command. It’s designed for tasks such as remote diagnostics, repair, and transporting supplies and spare parts.
- Modified Hilux: Built for exceptional off-road performance, this version is equipped with upgraded suspension, specialized tires, and a snorkel for rugged terrain, enhancing its reliability in extreme conditions.
Last year, TKM presented two Hilux variants—the Field Diagnosis Vehicle (FDV) and Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV)—at the North Tech Symposium, and handed over a fleet to the Indian Army. Toyota has also provided off-road driving and vehicle maintenance training to army personnel.
Sharing his thoughts, Mr. V. Wiseline Sigamani, Vice President of TKM’s Strategic Business Unit (North), stated, “We are honored to be part of Himtech 2024, showcasing the specially-purposed Hilux. Its global reputation for strength is due to its innovative IMV platform and robust powertrain system. These modified vehicles highlight Toyota’s expertise in creating solutions that meet the army’s unique operational needs, such as traversing rough terrains, conducting surveillance, and carrying out emergency rescue operations.”
The Hilux has spanned more than five decades and eight generations, serving as a reliable utility vehicle for off-road adventures and various industries, including defense, agriculture, and construction. Powered by a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, it offers both automatic and manual transmissions, a 700mm water-wading capacity, and unmatched versatility for both professional and personal use.
