JD Power: Price Transparency Boosts Automaker Website Satisfaction

Price Transparency Boosts Automaker Website Satisfaction, JD Power Finds

As the automotive retail experience continues to move further into the digital world, automakers are discovering that customers want more than attractive vehicle images and basic model information when they visit a manufacturer website. Increasingly, shoppers are looking for clear, accurate and detailed pricing information that helps them understand the real cost of buying a new vehicle.

A new study from JD Power suggests that automakers that provide greater pricing clarity are seeing meaningful improvements in customer satisfaction and purchase consideration. The findings highlight the growing importance of digital retail tools as consumers increasingly research, compare and evaluate vehicles online before ever visiting a dealership.

According to the JD Power 2026 U.S. Manufacturer Website Evaluation Study—Summer, overall satisfaction with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) websites has increased significantly compared with the previous measurement wave. Satisfaction among mass market brands has risen by 18 points on a 1,000-point scale, while premium brands have recorded a 13-point increase.

The improvement comes at a time when the online vehicle shopping journey is becoming more influential in the purchase process. For many consumers, an automaker’s website is often the first official source they use to learn about a vehicle. Shoppers may begin by looking at exterior styling, interior features, performance specifications and available technology, but pricing remains one of the most important factors influencing whether they ultimately move forward with a purchase.

The latest JD Power findings indicate that the quality and transparency of pricing information can have a direct impact on how consumers feel about the website experience and whether they seriously consider buying the vehicle they have researched.

Purchase consideration after visiting an automaker website has also increased. Among mass market shoppers, 52% now say they are considering purchasing a vehicle after visiting a manufacturer website, representing a 2-percentage-point increase compared with the previous wave. Among premium vehicle shoppers, purchase consideration has reached 54%, up 1 percentage point.

Much of this positive momentum is being linked to improvements in pricing-related website content. In particular, tools that help consumers research vehicle pricing and configure vehicles through build-and-price functions are becoming increasingly important.

These tools allow shoppers to move beyond simply viewing a manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Instead, they can explore different trim levels, options, packages and features to create a vehicle that more closely reflects what they might actually purchase. When pricing information is presented clearly and comprehensively, customers are better positioned to understand how their choices affect the final cost.

The importance of this transparency is especially significant in today’s automotive marketplace. Vehicle pricing can include multiple elements, including the base price, optional equipment, destination charges, taxes, registration fees, dealer fees, incentives and financing considerations. For consumers, determining the actual amount they may need to pay can sometimes be difficult when websites provide only limited or incomplete information.

Automakers are increasingly responding by offering more detailed pricing content and more sophisticated digital tools. Some websites now provide estimates that include available incentives and other cost factors, giving shoppers a more realistic view of the potential purchase price.

“Automakers are increasingly recognizing that pricing transparency drives consumer confidence,” said Chelsea Pettis, senior analyst of digital solutions at JD Power. “As manufacturers provide more complete pricing information on their websites—including incentives, fees, taxes and more realistic purchase cost estimates—shoppers gain a clearer understanding of what they can expect to pay at the dealership. That clarity has a meaningful impact: shoppers who leave a website with a clear understanding of vehicle pricing are nearly twice as likely to consider purchasing as those who remain uncertain, thereby contributing to higher satisfaction and stronger purchase consideration.”

The findings underscore a major shift in consumer expectations. Vehicle shoppers no longer view an automaker’s website simply as a digital brochure. They increasingly expect the website to function as a practical shopping and planning tool.

Consumers want to be able to identify the right vehicle, select the features they want, estimate the price and understand how the vehicle fits within their budget. The more effectively a website supports those tasks, the more useful it becomes during the purchase journey.

Pricing transparency can also help reduce uncertainty, which remains one of the biggest challenges in the vehicle-buying process. A shopper who has researched a vehicle online but has little understanding of its actual price may be hesitant to take the next step. Concerns about unexpected charges, dealer markups or additional fees can create friction and reduce confidence.

By contrast, shoppers who have access to more complete and realistic pricing information may feel better prepared when they contact a dealer or visit a showroom. They have a clearer idea of what they want, which options they prefer and what they can reasonably expect to pay.

The growth of build-and-price tools is an important part of this evolution. These tools allow shoppers to configure a vehicle in a highly personalized way. A customer can choose a model, select a trim, add packages and optional equipment, and then see how those decisions influence the overall price.

This level of interaction can make the online experience more engaging while also helping consumers make more informed decisions. It can also shorten the distance between initial research and purchase consideration.

The JD Power study measures customer satisfaction with automotive manufacturer websites during the process of shopping for a new vehicle. The semiannual study examines five key measures, ranked by importance: navigation, speed, visual appeal, vehicle research and research tools.

Each of these factors plays an important role in determining the quality of the digital experience. A website may offer extensive information, but if shoppers cannot easily find what they need, satisfaction can decline. Similarly, a website with attractive design may still frustrate users if pages load slowly or important tools are difficult to access.

Navigation remains critical because vehicle websites can contain large amounts of information. Shoppers may be searching for specifications, pricing, inventory, incentives, financing information or comparisons between different models. A well-organized website helps users find this information quickly and efficiently.

Website speed is another important consideration. As consumers become accustomed to fast digital experiences across industries, they increasingly expect automotive websites to respond quickly. Slow-loading pages, delays in configuration tools or technical problems can negatively affect the shopping experience.

Visual appeal also contributes to customer satisfaction. Modern vehicle buyers expect websites to provide high-quality images, videos and interactive features that allow them to explore vehicles in detail. Exterior colors, interior designs, technology features and other elements can all influence a shopper’s perception of a model.

Vehicle research remains a central part of the process. Customers want detailed information about performance, fuel economy, electric range, safety, technology, comfort and available features. The ability to compare different models and trims can also help shoppers narrow their choices.

Research tools, however, are becoming increasingly important as digital retail develops. Pricing calculators, build-and-price tools, payment estimators, inventory searches and other interactive features can help turn passive website visitors into more active shoppers.

The latest study suggests that improvements in these areas are producing measurable results. The increase in website satisfaction among both mass market and premium brands indicates that automakers are making progress in creating more effective digital experiences.

At the same time, the continued increase in purchase consideration shows that websites are becoming more closely connected to the overall sales process. A successful digital experience does not necessarily replace the dealership, but it can better prepare consumers for the next stage of their journey.

For automakers, the message is clear: providing more information is not enough. The information must also be accurate, easy to understand and presented in a way that reflects the customer’s real-world buying experience.

Pricing transparency may become especially important as vehicle purchasing continues to evolve. Consumers are increasingly comfortable conducting research, comparing products and making major purchasing decisions online. Automotive brands that fail to provide clear pricing information may risk losing shoppers to competitors that offer a more straightforward experience.

The challenge for automakers will be maintaining accuracy while accounting for changing incentives, regional fees, taxes and other factors that can influence the final transaction price. Nevertheless, the direction of the market is increasingly clear. Customers want to know what they are likely to pay before they commit to the next step.

The JD Power findings demonstrate that this expectation is not simply a matter of convenience. Greater pricing clarity can influence customer confidence, website satisfaction and purchase consideration.

As manufacturers continue to improve their digital retail strategies, the most successful websites are likely to be those that combine strong design with practical functionality. A visually appealing website may attract shoppers, but clear pricing, useful research tools and an easy-to-use buying journey can help keep them engaged.

The modern automotive website is therefore becoming much more than an online showroom. It is increasingly serving as the starting point for the entire vehicle purchase journey.

With customer satisfaction rising and purchase consideration increasing, the latest JD Power study highlights the growing connection between digital transparency and automotive sales. For manufacturers, providing shoppers with a clearer understanding of pricing could prove to be one of the most effective ways to build trust, improve the online experience and move customers closer to making a purchase.
