Renesas Launches 3nm Automotive Multi-Domain SoC

Renesas, a leading provider of semiconductor solutions, has unveiled its R-Car X5H system-on-chip (SoC), the first in its fifth-generation R-Car series. This groundbreaking SoC integrates multiple automotive domains, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), and gateway applications, into a single chip. Built on advanced 3nm process technology, the R-Car X5H is designed to support centralized electronic control units (ECUs), enabling streamlined development and scalable, future-ready automotive solutions.

Industry-Leading Integration and Performance

The R-Car X5H achieves unprecedented levels of integration with hardware-based isolation for safety-critical functions. It also supports chiplet technology to enhance AI and graphics processing performance, offering up to 400 TOPS of AI acceleration and 4 TFLOPS of GPU performance. With 32 Arm® Cortex®-A720AE CPU cores and six dual lockstep Cortex-R52 cores, the SoC delivers over 1,000K DMIPS in application processing and supports ASIL D safety standards.

Manufactured using TSMC’s state-of-the-art 3nm process, the R-Car X5H boasts 30-35% lower power consumption than its 5nm predecessors, reducing cooling costs and improving energy efficiency.

Chiplet Extensions and Mixed-Criticality Processing

The SoC supports chiplet extensions via UCle (Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express), enabling customers to scale AI performance by integrating external NPUs. Its hardware-based Freedom from Interference (FFI) technology securely isolates safety-critical functions, ensuring robust fault-tolerant systems.

Comprehensive SDV Development Platform

To accelerate Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) development, Renesas offers the R-Car Open Access (RoX) platform, integrating hardware, software, tools, and operating systems. This platform supports a wide range of automotive applications, including ADAS, IVI, and zonal controllers, enhancing scalability and reducing time-to-market.

Industry Recognition and Collaboration

Renesas’ collaboration with TSMC leverages cutting-edge 3nm technology optimized for automotive applications. Experts like TechInsights’ Asif Anwar highlight the R-Car X5H’s role in addressing the increasing complexity of SDVs by providing scalable, multi-domain solutions.
