Six new electric vehicle fast charging corridors are now fully operational, enhancing the accessibility of reliable and fast charging across Colorado. The new charging infrastructure doubles the state’s coverage of DC fast chargers along key highway corridors. Before the initiative began in 2019, only about 40% of Colorado’s highway corridors were within 30 miles of a fast charger. With the completion of the project, that coverage has surged to nearly 80%. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to build out EV charging infrastructure, supported by federal programs like the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, such investments are crucial to ensuring that the infrastructure can keep pace with the growing number of EVs on the road.
Colorado’s efforts to build an extensive EV charging network come at a time when the state is leading the nation in the market share of new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. According to the Colorado Energy Office, the state has the highest share of EV sales in the country, and this infrastructure is expected to be heavily utilized from the outset. Governor Jared Polis expressed pride in the state’s position as a leader in EV adoption, emphasizing the role that the growing network of charging stations will play in making EV travel more accessible and affordable. “Colorado is leading the nation in EV sales and making EV travel more affordable and convenient for everyone,” Polis said. “Colorado’s growing network of charging stations allows EV owners to travel with confidence knowing that there will be a place to get a quick charge.”
Will Toor, Executive Director of the Colorado Energy Office, highlighted the significance of the partnership with ChargePoint in establishing the foundation for Colorado’s public EV fast-charging network. “Our partnership with ChargePoint to install 33 fast chargers across the state was essential to help establish a foundation for Colorado’s public EV fast-charging network,” Toor said. “With convenient access to charging along our major transportation routes, Coloradans can now drive across the state in an electric vehicle, from the north to the south and the east to the west.”
The newly installed charging sites are strategically located along major highways in Colorado, such as Highway 40, I-70, Highway 50, and Highway 550. These locations have been selected to ensure that EV drivers have easy access to fast charging stations when traveling across the state. The charging stations are situated at convenient locations, including convenience stores, local visitor centers, and other points of interest, providing a seamless experience for drivers who may need to recharge their vehicles during travel.
