The Quasar 2 is a state-of-the-art bi-directional DC charger that, when paired with the Wallbox Power Recovery Unit, can allow drivers to power portions of their homes during power outages. This innovative technology enables eligible Kia EV9 owners to use their vehicles as a source of backup power, providing much-needed energy security in the event of electrical disruptions. The system can offer backup power for up to three days, depending on factors like home energy consumption and the vehicle’s battery charge level.
Empowering Kia EV9 Drivers with Energy Independence
Wallbox’s CEO, Enric Asunción, expressed excitement about the release of the Quasar 2, emphasizing the profound impact it will have on the energy management capabilities of eligible Kia EV9 owners and lessees. “We’re thrilled to offer this innovative technology to Kia EV9 drivers, bringing advanced energy capabilities that allow them to take control of their energy consumption, reduce costs, and ensure they have backup power during electrical outages,” he stated. “This solution is not only about faster charging, but it’s also about providing a more sustainable way to manage energy needs.”
The Quasar 2 offers a comprehensive set of features that deliver exceptional benefits to users, making it more than just a charger. It opens the door to new possibilities for home energy management, including the ability to use an EV as a power source for backup energy, vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging functionality, and even solar charging capabilities.
Key Features of the Quasar 2 Bi-Directional Charger
The Quasar 2 is engineered to provide both fast charging and discharge capabilities, with up to 12 kW of power. This allows for efficient and rapid charging, ensuring that your vehicle is ready to go when needed, whether for a trip or to provide energy back to your home.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the most notable features of the Quasar 2:
- Fast Charging & Discharging: With up to 12 kW of power, the Quasar 2 allows for rapid EV charging and discharging, significantly improving the overall convenience of owning an electric vehicle.
- Compact and Lightweight Design: The Quasar 2 is designed to be compact and lightweight, making installation easier and more flexible for homeowners.
- Backup Power Capability: By integrating the Power Recovery Unit, the Quasar 2 offers backup power, which can be crucial in areas affected by frequent power outages. This feature can provide emergency energy for up to three days, depending on energy consumption and vehicle charge levels.
- Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) Functionality: The Quasar 2 allows for the transfer of power from the vehicle to the home, ensuring that essential areas of the house can stay powered during an outage.
- Solar Charging: For those interested in combining their EV charging with renewable energy, the Quasar 2 is compatible with solar charging, enabling users to charge their vehicles with solar energy when paired with the Wallbox Power Meter for energy management solutions and a photovoltaic system.
Pricing and Pre-Order Details
The Quasar 2, along with the Wallbox Power Recovery Unit, is available for pre-order at a retail price starting at $6,440 (excluding taxes and installation fees). To secure a spot on the pre-order waitlist, eligible Kia EV9 owners and lessees must place a $100 deposit. Given the limited availability of the Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit for the initial release, customers who pre-order will receive priority access to the charger and its innovative features once they become available.

It’s important to note that pre-order availability is initially limited to residents of specific U.S. states, including California, Texas, Florida, New York, Washington, New Jersey, and Illinois. A nationwide rollout will follow. However, due to the nature of the technology and installation requirements, some regions may have restrictions, and installation could be subject to applicable permits and permissions, such as utility company approval.
Installation Process
Installation of the Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit must be scheduled separately through Wallbox’s official installation partner, COIL Inc., or another certified third-party provider. Wallbox recommends using COIL to ensure high standards of electrical safety and installation quality. This will also guarantee that all the available features, such as backup power and solar charging, function as intended.
The installation process includes an assessment of the home’s electrical system, scheduling, and the actual installation. COIL’s installation service is designed to ensure that the charger is properly set up for optimal performance, helping customers fully leverage the Quasar 2’s advanced features.
Considerations for Backup Power Functionality
The Quasar 2, when paired with the Power Recovery Unit, offers backup power functionality. However, there are important considerations regarding this feature:
- Power Supply: The backup power functionality is projected to provide up to three days of power for portions of a home, depending on an average energy consumption rate of 25 kWh per day. The actual duration of backup power will vary based on factors such as the energy consumption of the household, the size of the home, and the specific usage patterns of the EV9.
- Battery Charge: The backup power feature requires that the Kia EV9 be fully charged to 100% to provide maximum energy storage. The power will be used until the vehicle’s battery reaches 20% charge.
- Compatibility: The Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit may not be compatible with every home’s electrical system, and some jurisdictions may require a permit to upgrade electrical panels or get approval from local utility companies.
- Safety: It’s important to follow all safety instructions and warnings provided with the Quasar 2 and Power Recovery Unit to avoid potential injury. Professional evaluation of your home’s electrical system is recommended before installation.
