AtoB Integrates Payments Platform into Geotab

AtoB and Geotab Integrate Fleet Payments and Vehicle Intelligence to Improve Fleet Spending Control

AtoB, a financial technology company focused on modernizing payments for the transportation industry, has announced that the new Geotab Fleet Card is powered by AtoB’s payments platform. The announcement marks a significant development in the integration of fleet management technology and payment services, bringing vehicle intelligence, spending controls, fuel discounts and fraud prevention capabilities together in a single platform.

Launched by Geotab, a global provider of connected operations, video telematics and artificial intelligence-powered insights, the Geotab Fleet Card is designed to help fleet operators manage fuel and other vehicle-related expenses more efficiently. The card combines AtoB’s payment infrastructure with Geotab’s vehicle data and fleet management capabilities, allowing businesses to make more informed purchasing decisions while strengthening oversight of transactions.

Geotab is the first fleet management platform to embed AtoB’s payments platform directly into its software. The integration enables fleet operators to verify fuel purchases against vehicle-related information before transactions are authorized, helping businesses identify unauthorized spending and reduce potential fraud.

The solution is intended for fleets of different sizes and vehicle categories, ranging from light-duty Class 1 vans and pickup trucks to heavy-duty Class 8 commercial trucks. By bringing payment management into the software fleet operators already use, the companies aim to simplify financial administration and provide greater control over everyday transportation expenses.

Connecting Vehicle Data With Fleet Payments

Fuel represents a substantial operating expense for transportation businesses, particularly those managing large vehicle networks or operating vehicles over long distances. In many organizations, however, fleet operations and financial management have traditionally relied on separate systems.

Fleet managers may use telematics software to monitor vehicle locations, fuel levels, routes and operating conditions. Finance departments, meanwhile, often depend on payment statements and transaction reports to understand how company funds have been spent. This separation can make it difficult to identify suspicious transactions immediately or confirm whether a purchase corresponds to a legitimate vehicle requirement.

The Geotab Fleet Card is designed to address this challenge by connecting vehicle information with payment authorization.

Under the integrated system, Geotab contributes vehicle data, including location and fuel-level information, along with fleet-specific operating rules. AtoB provides the payment infrastructure, card program, spending controls, fuel discount network and supporting payment services.

When a driver attempts to purchase fuel, the system can evaluate the transaction against relevant vehicle information and the rules established by the fleet operator. If the vehicle is not located at the fuel station, the tank cannot reasonably accommodate the requested quantity, or the purchase falls outside approved conditions, the transaction can be declined during authorization.

Legitimate purchases that satisfy the applicable requirements can proceed through the payment system. This approach is intended to give fleet operators greater visibility into spending while reducing the time between identifying a potential problem and preventing an unauthorized transaction.

The same principle extends beyond fuel purchases. Fleet administrators can establish controls for other transportation-related expenses, including vehicle maintenance, towing and tolls. Rules can be configured according to approved spending amounts, timeframes, locations and merchant categories.

By linking payments with vehicle activity, the companies aim to make expense management a more immediate part of daily fleet operations rather than a process that begins only after transactions appear on a monthly statement.

AtoB Brings Payment Controls and Fuel Discounts to Geotab Customers

AtoB’s payment platform forms the financial foundation of the Geotab Fleet Card. The platform combines transaction authorization capabilities with spending management tools and access to a network of fuel stations offering discounts.

According to AtoB, the integration allows Geotab customers to manage spending across 13 supported categories. These include fuel, maintenance, towing and tolls, alongside other eligible expense categories supported by the program.

Fleet operators can establish individual rules based on their operational requirements. For example, a company can define spending limits for particular categories, restrict purchases to approved locations or specify when a card may be used. These controls can help businesses apply consistent spending policies across vehicles, drivers and operating regions.

The card also incorporates AtoB’s fuel discount network, providing access to discounted fuel purchases at participating locations. The network is intended to serve both long-distance trucking operations and local fleets that depend on regional gas stations.

AtoB reports that cardholders can save an average of 42 cents per gallon, with discounts of up to $2.50 per gallon, at more than 4,200 diesel truck stops. At an additional network of 30,000 local gas stations, the company reports average savings of five cents per gallon.

Actual savings will depend on the participating station, available discounts, purchase conditions and the fleet’s fueling patterns. Nevertheless, the network gives operators another way to manage fuel expenditure, complementing the card’s transaction controls and vehicle-based verification capabilities.

Combining discounts with authorization controls may be particularly useful for businesses operating multiple vehicles, where small differences in fuel prices and purchasing practices can accumulate into meaningful expenses over time.

Preventing Unauthorized Fuel Transactions

Fraud prevention is one of the central features of the Geotab Fleet Card. Traditional fuel cards can provide transaction records and spending limits, but fleet operators may still need to review purchases after they occur to determine whether a transaction was legitimate.

The integration of telematics information into payment authorization offers a different approach. Rather than relying exclusively on post-transaction reviews, the system can use available vehicle data to assess whether a purchase meets the fleet’s requirements before approval.

For example, a transaction may be declined if the associated vehicle is not at the merchant location, if the requested fuel volume exceeds the vehicle’s available tank capacity, or if the purchase occurs outside approved hours. Other fleet-specific restrictions can also be applied.

These checks are intended to help prevent unauthorized purchases and reduce the administrative effort involved in investigating suspicious activity.

AtoB also provides a fraud guarantee of up to $250,000 for eligible accounts, subject to the program’s telematics verification requirements. The guarantee is intended to provide an additional layer of protection for qualifying transactions, although eligibility depends on the applicable program conditions.

For fleet operators, the combination of vehicle-based transaction verification, customizable spending restrictions and the fraud guarantee may strengthen financial oversight while reducing exposure to certain types of payment misuse.

Managing Fuel and Non-Fuel Expenses in One Platform

The Geotab Fleet Card is designed to support a broader range of transportation expenses than fuel purchases alone. Fleet operators regularly pay for maintenance, towing, tolls and other services required to keep vehicles operating.

Managing these costs across different payment tools and reporting systems can complicate budgeting and financial reconciliation. By supporting multiple spending categories through one card program, the Geotab Fleet Card aims to simplify the process.

Businesses can configure spending policies according to category, amount, time and location, helping them align transactions with internal procedures. A fleet administrator could, for instance, apply separate spending limits to fuel and maintenance or establish restrictions for purchases made outside approved operating periods.

The card also brings transaction information and payment management capabilities into the Geotab platform. Customers can access transaction data, review approvals and declines, manage cards and use International Fuel Tax Agreement reporting tools alongside the vehicle information they already rely on.

The availability of these functions within one environment may help reduce the need to switch between separate systems when investigating purchases or preparing reports. It can also make it easier for fleet managers and finance teams to review vehicle activity and associated expenses together.

For organizations operating across multiple locations, a centralized approach can support more consistent financial controls and improve visibility into how money is spent throughout the fleet.

Leadership Highlights the Importance of Integrated Fleet Technology

AtoB and Geotab have emphasized the value of connecting vehicle intelligence with financial transactions.

Jacob Thomas, Vice President of Partnerships at AtoB, said fleet management platforms already have information about vehicle locations and operational requirements, but historically have lacked a direct way to apply that information when a purchase is attempted.

He explained that integrating AtoB into Geotab allows transactions to be evaluated against vehicle data at the point of purchase. The integration also provides access to discounted fuel at participating stations and is designed to support fleets ranging from local van operators to long-haul trucking businesses.

Thomas described fuel as an initial area in which fleet management platforms can exercise greater control over purchasing decisions. He also indicated that AtoB’s broader approach is to make its payment capabilities available within the software transportation businesses already use.

Steven Berube, Vice President of Sales at Geotab, highlighted the importance of managing fuel costs with more than periodic transaction statements. He said the partnership brings vehicle intelligence, payment controls and fuel discounts together in an experience built specifically for the Geotab platform.

The companies’ comments reflect a wider operational objective: using connected vehicle information to support decisions beyond routing, tracking and maintenance, extending its value into financial management.

A Native Integration Rather Than a Separate Connection

AtoB already integrates with fleet management systems to help businesses view spending alongside vehicle activity. However, the Geotab Fleet Card represents a further step in the company’s integration strategy.

Instead of simply connecting two separate systems, the arrangement places AtoB’s card issuance, payment controls and fuel discount capabilities within Geotab’s platform. AtoB and its issuing bank partners operate the underlying card program.

According to the companies, the Geotab Fleet Card is the first card AtoB has developed using this approach. It operates on the same AtoB payments platform that supports instant payments and access to capital for AtoB’s fleet customers.

Using a common payments infrastructure for fuel and non-fuel expenses may provide a foundation for additional capabilities as fleet operators seek more integrated financial and operational tools.

The approach also illustrates how telematics providers and financial technology companies can combine their respective capabilities. Fleet management platforms contribute information about vehicles and operations, while payment providers supply transaction processing, spending controls and financial services.

For customers, the intended benefit is a more unified workflow in which operational information and financial activity can be reviewed together.
